Did you know...

that the number of melodies with just 8 notes is at least 127 = 35,831,808 (that doesn't even take into account octave differences)? Just when you thought that you had heard everything!

Songwriting and Mathematics

Jason I. Brown has been a guitarist and songwriter since he was a teenager. He incorporates mathematical principles into his songwriting, both musically and lyrically. Some of his influences include:

  • The Beatles
  • James Taylor
  • Simon and Garfunkel
  • Django Reinhardt
  • Randy Newman
  • Tom Lehrer
  • Eric Clapton
  • The Indogo Girls
  • The Barenaked Ladies

and many, many more. Of course, there is no formula (mathematical or otherwise) for writing good songs, but mathematics can open you up to new ideas. And any songwriter knows the value of a good new idea.

In my book Our Days Are Numbered, I talk about how a mathematical outlook can provide you with endless musical ideas.
